I would highly recommend for business analysts and managers, including c-level execs. It talks about how the world is being captured by a series of data bases. These data bases are things you heard of like facebook and amazon. It is also occurring in places like automatic sensors on jet engines and the cars we drive. The book defends the practice. The authors say that through this data efficiencies can be found and future behavior can be accurately predicted based on past practices. This technique has occurred a lot over the past 200 years. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Jeffrey Hart -- good stories but too much hype : The main problem with this book is how it treats the relationship between theory and empirical research. The authors argue that the use of big data is different from that of small data (?) or sampled data in that there is no need for theories or hypotheses since one is operating on a universe instead of a sample. Drilling down is easier and more informative. Etc. But clearly the only way to interpret any kind of data is against a theory about what matters and why. The authors point out the differences between correlation and causation, but this comes near the end of the book after much foolishness about the advantages of big data. The best part of the book is about what companies and governments are doing with big data and how that might be a bit of a problem from the perspective of privacy and civil liberties. One factoid that I found interesting was that Google used text data from the scanning of library books to improve its translation software. There was a good discussion of the use of online search behavior for tracking potential epidemics. Also an interesting story about how the city of New York was able to use big data to predict manhole cover explosions. In the end, though, this book is really just a part of the general hype about big data and not a serious contribution to the larger discussion that is still emerging. It is one of the books that I would recommend to be used as reference book, as it contains lots of examples and quotations about individuals, who woke up to the reality of the Big data and how it could be utilised for the good and, perhaps, the more challenging way of profiling innocent people according to their names, culture, religion, political thoughts etc. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 4, 2015 )

Some people seem to find this threatening: I love it. I'd much rather an algorithm got it right than a self-important expert got it wrong. You can see how this is going to transform medicine, transport, packaging, deliveries. All we need now are educated people to ask the right questions of all this information. We could start by asking real questions about learning and education. Perhaps then our schools could become more humane and less insulting to our children's intelligence. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Fran_2013 -- Great entry point for a huge topic : I agree with other reviewers that the topic is superficially treated, and certainly for anyone that works in the field or has academic interest in Big Data the book will fall short. However for the uninitiated like me this is a great conceptual introduction to the subject and if read right after Who owns the Future by Jared Lanier the two books come together to form a very interesting and thought provoking package dealing with the future, the role which large companies such as Google, Facebook and Amazon play and how these companies have profited from data freely given, or otherwise by the public. The exposition is clear,concise, and intellectually satisfying and the illustrations of Big Data in action are very illuminating.
